The Leadership for Humanitarians Programme

1 ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

The programme is based on the latest thinking within leadership in 2011 and focusing on developing the right character and mindset to effectively navigate in and provide leadership to interagency contexts.

This approach is considerably different from regular trainings focusing on tools and managerial issues rather than leadership for people who have to demonstrate visionary, effective and inclusive leadership without having authority or title, yet being requested to excel in leading the humanitarian community on behalf of the United Nations.

2 ABOUT THE PROCESS

The Leadership process consists of:

Leadership Assessment one month prior to workshop

Pre-workshop readings

6 day workshop ending with an action plan

Follow with personal coaching; access to internet tools and learning’s; support via virtual forum

Leadership Assessment 3 months after workshop

3 ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Management:

Two days focusing on self-management and management issues, hereunder conflict resolution, prioritization, performance management, accountability and trust, execution, develop third alternatives, collaboration and team and employee development.

Leadership:

Three and a half day focusing on four leadership imperatives:

  • Inspire Trust: to build credibility, so that people will trust you with their highest efforts (make trust action plans with stakeholders, make trust an explicit goal of work, what behaviors increase and decrease trust with partners).
  • Clarify Purpose: to define a clear and compelling purpose that partners will want to offer their best to achieve (define vision, mission, strategy and create strategic links).
  • Align Systems: create systems of success that support the purpose and goals, enable people to do their best work, operate independently of the leaders, and endure over time  (identify the wildly important goals, make goals measurable and visible, analyze the talent on the team, improve processes: feedback systems, meetings techniques, core processes).
  • Unleash Talent: develop a strong team where people’s unique talents are leveraged against clear performance expectations in a way that encourages responsibility and growth performance.
